Thandie Newton

Thandie Newton at Columbia Pictures Premiere of '2012' at Regal Cinemas LA Live on November 03, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.
Thandie Newton was radiant at the "2012" movie premiere last month wearing a Prabal Gurung dress. When you wear something as elegant as this you don't need much else to make the look complete. Thandie opts for a statement ring and show-stopping red lips. If you need a bag to hold all your essentials, as most of us do, a classic and simple clutch will do. Don't forget vertigo heels and you're good to go!

Steal Thandie's Style

Dress: Mazerine Dress by DVF, $255, www.shopbop.com
Shoes: Carlos by Carlos Santana Privilege, $110, www.piperlime.com
Ring: Sterling Silver Marcasite Mother-of-Pearl Ring, $39.99, www.target.com

Thandie Newton is the epitome of style and eloquence. Stealing her style will never fail you. If you can get away with it, don the bright, jungle red lipstick with the DVF dress. If not, don't fear. This post will help you figure out what shade of red is perfect for you. Where a dress like this for your next birthday soiree or a first date with that special guy. ;)

One Blazer to Go!

Thandie Newton attends the gallery opening party of Established and Sons, at Established and Sons on October 11, 2007 in London, England.
Naomi Campbell leaves after appearing in a Manhattan Criminal Court for assault charges on November 15, 2006 in New York City.
Vanessa Williams poses for a photo at the HomeAgain event launching 'Bring Pets Home' campaign at the Animal Haven in Soho on October 25, 2007 in New York City.
Sharon Leal attends Women's Health Magazine's Premiere 'Blue Issue' event at the Mondrian Hotel's Sky Bar Co-Hosted by Molly Sims and Rebecca Gayheart on October 18, 2007 in West Hollywood, California.

Yes I know we are still in the dead heat of summer but owning a tailored black blazer is a must whatever the season. Blazers can instantly turn a casual outfit into a sophisticated winner. Take style tips from the four ladies above who all invested in a fitted, black blazer and reaped the benefits on the red carpet. Whether your heading for a business meeting or just want to transform a favorite dress, blazers have you covered... literally!

A Black and White Affair…

Thandie Newton and Eva Mendes attending the launch party for new range of bags created by Mulberry for Giles, at Harvey Nichols, London in January 2007.
Angela Bassett attending the ceremony honoring Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this week in Hollywood.
Cassie posing backstage after her appearance on MTV's Total Request Live last September in New York City.
Sanaa Lathan at the Cosmopolitan Magazine launch of Bebe Sport with Eva Longoria last March.
Kimora Lee Simons posing in the lobby during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2007 in New York City.
Kelly Rowland with designer Tracy Reese backstage at the Tracy Reese Fall 2007 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in the Promenade in Bryant Park this February in NYC.

Sorry the posts have been slow this week I’ve been busy with papers and then blogger was acting up. Anyway, monochrome prints are going to be hot this summer but if you don’t do pretty patterns opt for block colors. Black and white stripes like Cassie and Thandie’s give this look a harder edge.

The Midas Touch

A dress from MaxMara’s Spring 2007 Ready-to-Wear.
Thandie Newton, Sienna Miller (in Burberry Prorsum) and Kelly Rowland shine on the red carpet.

Trend Alert: Gold-plated dresses. MaxMara’s Spring 2007 ready-to-wear collection was all about the metallic, sack dress and while I felt the designers over stated their point, celebrities have taken a style cue from the fashion house and sprinkled a little gold dust into their lives. Admittedly a luxurious gold dress similar to Thandie, Sienna or Kelly’s will set you back a couple of hundred (or even thousand dollars) but you can look equally glam with a great bag or pair of shoes.

Note: See previous ‘Trend Alert.’

Style on the Go...

Thandie Newton arriving at the Orange British Academy Film Awards, at the Royal Opera House Sunday night in London.
Rihanna attending the Universal Music Grammy party held at The Palm Restaurant Sunday night in Hollywood.
Beyonce Knowles arriving at the Sony/BMG Grammy party held at the Beverly Hills hotel on Sunday in Beverly Hills.
India.Arie arriving at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center on February 11, 2007 in Los Angeles.

So many events so little time! Gotta start off with Thandie Newton and her gorgeous champagne colored dress. I don’t know who the designer is but she worked the hell out of it. I guess there’s life after “Norbit.” Also notice the jewelry she has on… She gets an A+ from head-to-toe.

Rihanna opted for jewel green for this year’s Grammys – it emphasizes the natural color of her eyes. I love the cut of this dress, especially at the back (see beginning of slide show). I also love how Rihanna steered clear of the played out, long weave and went with an edgier cut instead. Tres chic!

I’m not to keen on the hair but the dress and make up is on point. Beyonce is definitely a pro when it comes to red carpet poses! She’s come a long way, remember those Destiny’s Child days? *shudders*

Lastly, I’m not a fan of the dress, or shoes for that matter, but India.Arie looks AMAZING! I’m bias to natural hair so I adore this look on her. I wonder if it’s hers or if she twisted in some natural hair? If it’s hair it sure grows quick!

The Search Continues…

Letoya Luckett attending Ciara's Birthday Party at Marquee on last month in New York City.
Janet Jackson arriving at the Genetic Denim's one-year anniversary at AREA Nightclub on last week in Los Angeles.
Thandie Newton attending the gala opening of the Exceptional Youth Exhibition hosted by Teen Vogue's editor in chief Amy Astley, at the National Portrait Gallery earlier this month in London.
Jessica Alba candid taken last year in New York City.

Formal coats are all good and well. They look great and instantly glam up an outfit, but a sista needs to keep warm. I’m not comfortable wearing layers upon layers like Jessica Alba (pictured above), so this winter I’m going to make like Letoya and invest in a huge fur-collared jacket that I can rock with my jeans and ugg boots (are we still wearing those?!) See below for more ideas…

Winter Comforts...

Jessica Alba gets her nails done at Virtual Spa during the REEL Lounge Retreat at the Point De Vue Salon on March 3, 2006 in Los Angeles.
Thandie Newton attending the Alexandra Shulman's Pre-BAFTA Dinner at Cecconi's earlier this year in London.
Long Sweater Wrap by D&G, $175.00, Neiman Marcus

I remember how ugly scarves used to be back when I was a kid. In the eighties scarves were for practical purposes only, I had one that used to scratch me so bad I couldn’t wait to get it off. I think I actually hid it and pretended I lost it so that I wouldn’t have to deal with it. Flash forward 20 years and they’re perfect accessory for your winter wardrobe. Jessica Alba and Thandie Newton look divine in theirs. See below for further inspiration, this winter there’s no excuse to be cold.

The Color Purple…

Thandie Newton arriving at the UK Premiere of "The Last King Of Scotland" during the opening gala of The Times BFI London Film Festival, at the Odeon Leicester Square last week in London. The movie kicked off the annual film festival, which runs from October 19 to November 2.
Top: Clyde, $110.00, www.faith.co.uk; Araminta, $109.99, Aldo; SKU #7243142, $99.95, www.zappos.com
Middle: Tassel, $89.95, Steve Madden; Prencella, $99.99 (On Sale!), Nine West; Pango, $79.95, Steve Madden
Bottom: Dot Studded Ankle Boot with Crossed Buckle from a selection by Marc Jacobs; NV, $169.95, Steve Madden; Petre, $275.00, Georgina Goodman

Move over Dorothy, your red shoes are so passé! Purple is the new shoe color of choice amongst urban fashionistas. Perfect with either jeans or a dress, they bring an unexpected twist to any outfit - who else is going wear purple pumps? See Thandie for proof, that outfit would typically be paired with black, red or gold heels, but the purple takes the look to a whole new level. Also try these $25 pumps from www.paylessshoes.com.

Style on the Go...

Thandie Newton arriving at the launch and tea party for new online shopping site called www.doorone.co.uk hosted by Bay Garnett, in London.
Gabrielle Union attended the "Self Spotlight" the first-ever benefit to support breast cancer awareness at Crobar on Wednesday night in New York City.
Cheri Dennis spotted at the Heineken’s Red Star Soul event in Cleveland earlier this week.
Natalie Cole attending Janet Jackson's "20 Y.O." album release party at Room Service in New York City last Tuesday.

Everyone looks suburb although the leggings Cheri Dennis is wearing are confusing, the outfit would have worked better if she’d opted for loose fitting capris. Gabrielle Union never fails to look good even if that dress isn’t the cutest I’ve seen. Thandie Newton looks cute in her own way, don’t know anyone else who could pull off that outfit. And finally, for 56 Natalie Cole looks damn good… She couldn’t have picked a more flattering dress and shoes to match. Just one question – Is that her real eye color?!

Traces of Lace...

Thandie Newton attending the VIP launch party for British couture label Marchesa's Spring/Summer 2006 collection, in Selfridges, Oxford Street earlier this year.Kate Moss attends the 2005 CFDA Awards at the New York Public Library.Venus Williams arriving at 'The Cipriani Wall Street Concert Series' at Cipriani Wall Street in November last year.

I've always wanted a lace dress, but finding one that doesn't look like something your grandmother would wear has proven challenging! The key perhaps is to wear only a little, like the ladies above who restrict themselves to just splashes of the material. If dresses aren't your thing try a skirt like Thandie Newton... So don't confine lace to just your lingerie, it's too sexy for just your man to see!

Knitted Affair...

Thandie Newton attends the American & British Vogue London Fashion Week cocktail party, hosted by Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour and her UK counterpart Alexandra Shulman in February - Too chic!
Zoe Saldana attends a special screening of "Melinda and Melinda" last year
Keyshia Cole attends the Jacob & Co. Sneaker Launch at Manhattan Motors during Olympus Fashion Week September 13, 2005 - Lovin' this cardigan!

I was inspired by the first photo of Thandie Newton wearing that gorgeous knitted shawl over her equally fabulous dress, and it got me thinking about how knitwear is making a come back. As the summer months draw to a close I may invest in a chunky cardigan, as opposed to a jacket, to see me through the seasonal transition. Most people wear cardigans in the day or for unofficial occasions (see Keyshia Cole), but I think with the great selection out there, you can also wear them for more formal occasions (see Thandie Newton). Learn how in the next post…

Ladies in Red...

Sanaa Lathan looks simply stunning in red at the HollyRod Escada Event
Thandie Newton in a gorgeous strapless dress at the UK Premiere Of Almodovar Film 'Volver' in London
Garcelle Beauvais arriving at the HollyRod Escada Event with lovely gold shoes and accessories

Red looks great against any skin complexion, and though it's a color I stray from, the ladies above are slowly bringing me around. I especially think Sanaa looks S.T.U.N.N.I.N.G in that gorgeous dress! You can't hide in a red dress so release your exhibitionist side and wear red to your next major event... scroll up for the best looks!

BET Style...

Rhianna and Kelly looking simply stunning...
Beyonce and former bandmate Letoya. Letoya looks great, so does Bey but i'm not too sure about her Mariah-ish dress!
Kelis and Janet with their arm candy! Kelis' dress is great and Janet is really showing off that new body of hers in that dress.
Thandie Newton and Michelle Williams looking great, i'm especially happy for Michelle who has been looking a little drained lately. :(
Cassie and Brooke Valentine - I'm on the fence with both these outfits...

I'm a little late, but better later late then never! The BET Awards '06 took place last Tuesday, 27th June and for the most part everyone looked great although it seemed a few people were looking into 'fun-house' mirrors before they left the house (Tocorra?) Notables for me were Kelly, Kelis (loved the uniqueness of her dress) and Rhianna. Looks like Leopard print was the theme of the night (see above)... all-in-all the stars came out in force!
