Street Style: Gabi of Young, Fat & Fabulous

This past weekend over brunch, a group of friends and I were discussing fashion (no surprise there) the subject evolved to fashion blogs and we started naming our favorites. We all had our iPhones, Driods and Blackberrys out so we quickly started googling sites to view each other's recommendations. Hands down the unanimous winner was Young, Fat & Fabulous. If you don't know, please get to know. Gabi Gregg is the blog's savvy and fashion forward author. Not only has she been featured on Vogue Italia's site, she's also MTV's Twitter correspondant. Don't sleep on this talent. Her style choices are to die for and she proves time-and-time again that women can look fabulous at any size! I've gotten so many ideas from her already. Click here for details on this photo's outfit.

Have a Little Faith

Items from Faith 21's new line

Apparently 60% of women 18 or over are wearing size 12-plus, yet most fashion stores only stock items up to a size 12/14 max. With "plus size" fashion being an under served yet highly in-demand market, Forever 21 is stepping up to the plate and launching their new line called Faith 21 for women size 12 and over. As a side note I can't understand why being a size 12 is considered "plus size". I'm 5"9 and a size 8/10 and I'm a 'large' in Forever 21!! And let's hope the quality of this new line is a little better. I'd like to be able to put their clothes in the washing machine without fear of them disintegrating.

Anyway, this new line will feature items similar to other Forever 21 clothing lines, including flirty dresses, trendy tops, skirts, jeans and basics such as T-shirts, camisoles, tanks and leggings (see above pics for a sample). The target customer is age 15 to 29. Prices will range from $3.80 to $29.80. Look out for the launch later this month. The line will be available in some of the chain’s new or mall locations, but it will not be stocked at the Michigan Avenue flagship store, at least not immediately.

Old Navy: Fall Collection

Above: Silk Ruffle Top $29.50 Denim Pencil Skirt $32.50, www.www.oldnavy.com/plus
Left to right: Flutter Sleeve Top $29.5o; Ruched Neck Dress $36.50; Color Block Top $26.50 all available at www.oldnavy.com/plus

So I've noticed that some of the comments left on previous "plus size" clothing posts have pointed out that the quality of the outfits online are not all that great. Well, Old Navy has stepped up and provided an appealing alternative for Fall. Old Navy Women’s Plus is offered exclusively online at www.oldnavy.com/plus and features the latest fashions designed specifically for sizes 16-30. The online store provides an expanded selection of fashion apparel that help customers go from work to weekend and day to night – all at affordable prices. See above for a few items from their latest collection. The site also provides $7 flat rate shipping on all orders and free returns by mail for any Women’s Plus clothes - great for when you change you mind about something like I do constantly! To get a sneak peak of the rest of their Fall collection click here. My favorites are their dresses and casual tops from the Jewel Box Colors line.

This One’s For You…

Above: Onyx Nite Stretch Satin Dress, $59, www.silhouettes.com**
Left to right: Tropical Print Dress, $69; Eyelet Shirtdress, $59; Shirtdress, $49 all available at www.silhouettes.com**

I’ve had a few emails from readers requesting that I include at least one item for women sizes 14 and up in each post. Most times that proves difficult but while looking over Silhouettes.com for an upcoming post, I noticed that a lot of their dresses where relevant to posts I’d written in the past. For example, take the “Take a Leaf Out of Her Style Book: Halle Berry” post. I chose these dresses but you can check out the Eyelet Shirtdress for $59. One of summer’s popular must-have dresses is the Maxi Dress. I loved these choices but try the Tropical Print Dress, $69. And lastly, for an ultra chic Satin Dress you must Onyx Nite Stretch Satin Dress. At just $69, it beats out my original picks.

SizeAppeal.com

Above: April, $48, www.sizeappel.com
Left to right: Malin, $28; Aziza, $28; Alice in Mint, $29, all available at www.sizeappeal.com

So the other day my co-worker and I were having yet another frustrated conversation about how stores don’t carry pants wide enough for our hips or jeans big enough for our booty. Then my other co-worker yelled “shut the hell up” from down the hallway since none of us knew what it was like to be over a size 14 trying to shop at the local mall. Granted she had a point but what’s up with all the hostility? I’m just playin’! This sista is always dressed to impress. You would never know the trouble she goes through trying to find clothes that flatter her figure. It was her who suggested I do a write up on www.sizeappeal.com. She’s bought many of her summer items from this online store and I can tell you first hand that the stuff is cute! Now I have another place to complain about. Can a sista get that green dress in a size 8?!

Jill Scott

Jill Scott's "Real Thing" Cocktail Reception at the Roof Top Garden on June 14, 2007, New York City.
I’ve had so many emails from people asking me to do a “Steal Style” for this Jill Scott outfit. Whilst I couldn’t find the exact dress I found some in a similar style and/or color. I think she looks absolutely flawless and since she’s newly single (her divorce to Lyzel is still pending), she needs to let people know she’s back in the game. See below for how to achieve this look.

Steal Jill’s Style

Dress: Floral Dress 24.99 www.charlotte-russe.com
Ring: SS Ring Large Oval Mop, $18.39, www.target.com
Earrings: Hammered Hoops in Silver, $4.99, www.girlprops.com
Heels: Air S Crkcork Heel, $20.99, www.gojane.com

I know, I know this dress doesn't come in plus sizes but I've included some below. If you have a complex about showing off your arms then try the long-sleeved dresses below from Bandlu.com or Igigi.com. You’ve got to rock this look with big hair, Jill makes it look so good. Whether you have natural or relaxed hair try and achieve some volume, it’ll take this outfit to the next level.

Best of the Rest…

Left to right: Alva Dress, $72, www.bandlu.com; Lucinda Printed Silk Jersey V Neck, $318, www.monifc.com; Madeline Silk Rainbow Peacock, $238, www.monifc.com; Floral Wrap Dress in Green, $85, www.igigi.com

These dresses all come in pluss sizes (roughly starting from sizes 14 and up).

Cute Girls Come In Different Sizes…

Above: Nefe Dress, $130, www.mignonettedesigns.com
Left to right: Anne Dress, $220; Yasamen, $225; Black Pink Polka Dress; Red Hook Dress, $225 all available at www.mignonettedesigns.com

Mr. Pilati take note. The fabulous come in all shapes, sizes and skin colors and if you doubt it let the Brooklyn-based design house “Mignonette” prove it to you. Their pieces are “handmade with love” and are available in sizes 0 to 16. Mignonette literally means “cute girl” in French and it’s not hard to see why they picked their name. With dresses that seamlessly fit into anyone’s wardrobe, Mignonette’s aim is to provide clothing that makes everyone look and feel amazing and they succeed. I don’t know how they do it, but each creation flatters any and every body shape. Visit www.mignonettedesigns.com to receive a 20% discount off any item using the code “StealStyle.”

Party Dresses: Plus Size

Left to Right: Charmeuse Faux Wrap Dress, $156, www.kiyonna.com; V-neck Drape Front Bridal Gown, $149.50, www.lanebryant.com; Ruched Surplice Dress, $116, www.kiyonna.com; Asymmetric Geometric Print Halter Dress, $74, www.babyphat.com
Left to Right: Inlisted Ankle Wrap Pump, $17.99, www.payless.com; Exaura, $39.95, www.aldoshoes.com; Glamour Sandal, $34, www.fredericks.com; Mossimo Heidi Satin Bow Heels, $17.99, www.target.com

Geesh, I had a hard time finding cute dresses for less than $100. I don’t like putting items on this site that I’m not 100% happy with so here’s the final selection, even though it’s not all that kind on the purse strings. To balance it out, I picked some cute shoes for less than $40 (except one pair!) Payless, Target and Fredericks have great offers right now. Now the white gown is technically a bridal dress, but I would definitely rock it at a formal Christmas dinner. I’m also lovin’ the purple satin dress from Kiyonna.com… An absolute must-have!

Party Dresses: Plus Size continued…

Left to Right: Silk n Satin Dress, $168, www.alight.com; After Five Cotton Dress by Donna Ricco, $118, www.alight.com; Women's Plus Strapless Dress, $24.50, www.oldnavy.com; Pleated Waist Halter Dress, $99.95, www.avenue.com
Left to Right: Rhinestone Ankle Strap Heel, $26.50, www.wetseal.com; Women's Lucy by Halle Bob, $109.99, www.shoes.com; Black Heels with Rhinestones, $26.50, www.windsorstore.com; Karina Satin Pump. $17.99, www.payless.com

The red halter dress from Avenue.com is similar to the one Gabrielle Union wore in the post below. Don’t feel like you have to team it with a red or gold purse, pick another rich color with the same hue. The strapless dress from Old Navy is the perfect LBD for just $24.50. Pair with those shoes for an outfit that costs less than $60! Lastly, the floral dress is for more casual occasions, like Christmas lunch. Wear with a luxurious knit for understated elegance. ;)

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson arriving for Stuff Magazine's Toys for Bigger Boys Party at Hammerstein Ballroom earlier this week in New York City.
In the spirit of ‘Jennifer Hudson season’ (and a request from a regular reader ;) I found an exact replica of this dress that Jennifer wore to an event earlier this week. She looks stylish and sleek in this classic, black, knee-length shift. However, be careful if you have a bigger bust than Jennifer, you could end up looking top heavy. Scroll down for her complete look…

Steal Jennifer’s Style…

Dress: Classic Sheath Dress, $49.95, www.avenue.com
Shoes: Black Affair Patent Heel, $38, www.torrid.com
Bag: Contempo Clutch, $12.80, www.forever21.com
Belt: Faux Croc Belt, $26.50, www.lanebryant.com

This dress comes in sizes 14 to 28. I think it already has a belt but if you want to accentuate your waist, add a medium to thin sized belt like the one above. Patent is so in right now, so pair the dress with this cute patent clutch and pumps (love the leopard print insoles). Don’t forget to add tights!

Jeans 101: Sista Big Boned

Queen Latifah arriving at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood in March of this year.
Raven Symone promoting her new film “The Cheetah Girls 2” in Detroit in August of this year.Missy Elliott arriving at Ciara's Birthday Party at Marquee last month in New York City.

I’m not trying to leave out my bigger sistas, so below are a couple of great sites with extensive denim collections. I did my best to find jeans that flatter the thighs as well as the booty. I wonder where Queen Latifah buys her jeans, or even her whole wardrobe, she always looks so fly!

My Picks!

Left to Right: Blue Perfection Jean, $52.00, www.alight.com; Denim Lite Bootcut Jean, $44.50, www.avenue.com; Roc Flame Jean, $78.00, Rocawear; Signature Jeans, $88.00. www.kiyonna.com
Left to Right: Torrid Low Rise Flare Leg Denim Jean, $48.00, www.torrid.com; Academy Blue Wash Deconstructed Denim Jean by Z. Cavaricci, $48.00, www.torrid.com; Renee, $150.00, www.svobodastyle.com; Gold Wash Signature Jean, $64.00, Baby Phat

While researching I noticed that www.alight.com and www.torrid.com have a large selection of jeans all for less than $100. But I’ll be honest, this was new territory for me so I’m sure I missed a lot of great brands and sites. Please leave comments for fellow readers on where you’ve bought your perfect pair of jeans. :)
